Bio
Jennifer Lockwood was
first introduced to teaching while working towards her undergraduate degree
in Theatre Arts. Jennifer had the privilege of teaching workshops for high
school students in the areas of the Dramatic Arts. This was when she
decided that education was the field she felt most passionate about. After
receiving her Single Subject Teaching Credential in Language Arts, Jennifer
taught Language Arts and Social Studies at Sylmar High School. During the
summer she traveled to Ghana where she taught English to girls at a UNICEF
school in Prampram. At Sylmar High School she highly enjoyed teaching Romeo
and Juliet to English Language Learners and took her students to the
Renaissance Fair where they practiced their newfound Shakespearean
vocabulary. It was while working at Sylmar where a close friend encouraged
her to bring her talents to a brand new charter middle school, CHIME. At
CHIME she was able to refine her teaching skills and become a teacher of
students of all abilities. Jennifer became a master teacher and trained
numerous student teachers in the area of Language Arts.
As a founding faculty
member of CHIME Charter Middle School, Jennifer was able to achieve her
dream of being a drama teacher. She put on plays such as Cinderella,
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Annie. During
Jennifer’s teaching career she also attended such workshops and trainings as
Schools Attuned, the 5th Annual Southern California Teacher Forum
on Holocaust Education, What’s New in Young Adult Literature,
AVID, Teaching the Jane Schaffer Writing Program, and Sopris
West: Language.
Through assisting in
the development of policies and procedures at the brand new CHIME Charter
Middle School, Jennifer developed an interest in school administration. She
began her studies at California State University, Northridge in the
Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies where she was able
to further strengthen the bond between CSUN and CHIME. As principal of
CHIME Charter Middle School, Jennifer is able to facilitate the continuation
of the Drama program, as well as Sports, Arts, Publishing, Yearbook, and
Science Enrichment courses. She has developed a close relationship with the
Parent Association, helping to facilitate fundraisers involving the
community. Through a beautification grant and workdays involving Chatsworth
community members, a lovely mural was painted on the yard wall depicting
varying aspects of the school, the community, and the world at large. She
looks forward to applying for more grants to improve the school’s facilities
and enriching CHIME’s already high quality educational programs.
